Basic Training

1.) For the first 2 -3 weeks with the new family it is important for the puppy to

continue his socialization and to establish good habits. Get puppy on a routine.

2.) Teach puppy his name.

3.) Teach puppy to come on command, to sit, to stay, down and heel.

4.) Housebreak puppy, he must be taken outside upon awakening, after eating

and following playtime. In general he will have to relieve himself every two-three hours.

5.) Train puppy to ride in a car as soon as possible.

6.) Train puppy not to jump or not to play roughly. Remember to always praise him

and offer a small reward. Your puppy is a retriever and likes to bring things to you,

so if he brings you your diamond necklace, a mink coat or a dirty sweat sock. Show

your appreciation and thanks, but substitute with a chew toy instead!!!

7.) Enroll puppy in a basic obedience class as soon as possible, usually after they

receive their last shots along with their rabies vaccination. In a addition,

a puppy kindergarten class may also benefit you and the puppy.

I can not stress the importance of basic training enough.
